An Indian Air Force (IAF) Chinook heavy-lift helicopter has achieved a notable flying feat by completing a non-stop sortie from Chandigarh to Jorhat (Assam), setting a record for helicopter travel in India. The 1910-kilometer journey was accomplished in 7 hours and 30 minutes, showcasing the Chinook’s capabilities and the effective operational planning and execution by the IAF’s Western Air Command, according to a spokesperson.
The Chinook, recognized as a multi-role, vertical lift platform, is utilized for the transportation of personnel and materials, playing a crucial role in humanitarian and disaster relief operations. The IAF spokesperson emphasized that the rapid mobility afforded by the Chinook allows the IAF to utilize this asset optimally based on operational requirements.
The CH-47 (F) I Chinook heavy-lift helicopter was formally inducted into the IAF’s inventory on March 25, 2019, at a ceremony held in Air Force Station, Chandigarh. The IAF had entered into a contract with Boeing Limited in September 2015 for the supply of 15 Chinook helicopters, which have since been received and deployed in Chandigarh and the North East.
The Chinook helicopter has undergone customization to align with the IAF’s future requirements and capability roadmap. It features a fully integrated digital cockpit management system, advanced cargo handling capabilities, and an electronic warfare suite.
